Free crochet egg pattern

Are you looking for some new Easter decor? Or perhaps some gifts to add to your dinner table for a family get together? These beautiful eggs will be sure to impress. Once you have made the basic egg (which is really quick to do!) you can decorate them in a wide variety of ways. Whether you fancy trying your hand at embroidery or possess an enviable button collection that you want to use, the possibilities are endless. This egg pattern is all you need to get started.

Basic egg pattern

You will need:

  • Small amounts of yarn (I used DK leftovers, any yarn can be used but the finished size will vary)
  • 3mm crochet hook (or hook size appropriate to yarn chosen)
  • Stitch marker (optional but recommended!)
  • Polyester stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embellishments (buttons, embroidery thread)
  • Embroidery needle (if using embroidery threads)
  • Hanging thread or ribbon (optional)

Skill level: beginner

Tension: Not critical for this project – just ensure that the stitches are tight enough to prevent the stuffing showing through.

Finished size: When using DK yarn and 3mm hook, each egg measures approximately 6cm tall

Pattern notes: Eggs are worked top down and in a spiral, amigurumi style-do not join rounds, just use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

Ta da-one eggcellent egg! Now it’s time to let your imagination run wild with the decorations! My favourite way to embellish them is with embroidered spring flowers – I just used scraps of yarn but embroidery thread would work well too.
