Free striped crochet dog sweater pattern
Does your sizzling sausage dog need a fancy striped crochet dog sweater this autumn? This free crochet pattern will have you making a whole wardrobe of stylish crochet striped dog sweaters! It’s crocheted in aran yarn to make it extra cosy. It is also fully customisable to get a perfect fit for small dog breeds who aren’t quite as long. The stripe pattern is easy to change to use up your yarn stash too.
I designed the sweater with a stretchy ribbed neckband and a buttoned up strap under the body. This makes it nice and easy to get on, as well as being comfy for your dog.

sttr Pull up a loop to the height of a tr st, holding the loop on the hook with your finger, and make a yarn over using the 2 strands of the loop. Yarn over using the working yarn and pull through, yo and pull through again. This video will help https://youtu.be/aYoSW1CzfMk
sttr2tog Make a slipknot on your hook, yo, insert hook into st, yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into next st, yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2 loops, yo and pull through all 3 loops.
ij On the last stitch of any round, do not sl st to join. Snip the yarn and pull the loop so the end of the yarn comes out of that stitch. Thread the yarn onto your needle and under the legs of both parts of the ‘v’ of the second stitch of the round, then down through the middle of the last stitch of the round. stdc Make a slipknot on your hook, insert hook into st, yo and pull through, yo and pull through both loops.
Pattern notes (please read before starting)
- The neck band is worked first in rows, then joined to make a tube.
- The first round of the body of the sweater is worked into the ends of the rows of the neck band.
- The chest section is then worked in rounds, but the work is turned after each round.
- Rounds begin with a starting treble (sttr) and are joined with invisible join (ij) which makes the seam less visible.
- Sttr can be replaced by ch 3 if you prefer.
- After the chest section, you work the sweater in rows.
- You work the fastening strap as part of the main body.
- Beg ch 1 does not count as a st.
- Any wool or acrylic Aran weight yarn is suitable so this is a great way to use up your yarn scraps to make a unique and fun item!
- Overall metreage is approximately 200m (100g if using Hobbii Tweed Delight), though this may vary if you change the length.
Customising your striped crochet dog sweater
- To make a deeper neckband you can increase the foundation chain by the desired amount.
- I have written the pattern based on a miniature dachshund. You can adjust the length of the sweater by working more or fewer rows after the strap before beginning the decreases.
- The stripe pattern alternates between main colour (MC) and contrast colour (CC).
- You can work the stripes however you choose. Just keep track of how many rounds/rows you have worked to ensure the fastening strap ends up in the right place.
